Investigating voice communication over multipath wireless mobile ad hoc network

Abstract: With the rapid growth and popularity of wireless LANs (WLANs), a demand of Voice over IP (VoIP) is also increasing. In recent years, dominant trend of development in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) technology makes VoIP services more appealing. However, it is still quite challenging to ensure quality voice communication in MANET. Some of these challenges include packet loss due to network congestion, and variable packet latency. Not only traditional single-path ad-hoc routing but also traditional voice codec fa… Show more

“…Some solutions have been proposed by researchers to ensure better voice quality in MANETs. In [4], authors propose a multipath routing scheme for voice communications over MANETs based on AODV routing protocol and they call it AODV-MAP. They believe that transmitting voice through multiple routes can improve the performance as chances of losing all routes at a time are very few.…”

“…The same applies to multimedia communications in MANETs where efforts to ensure QoS of delay sensitive services are limited [4] [6] [8]. Voice is also a delay sensitive service when applied in IP networks.…”

“…There also exist coding aware protocols which rely on AODV [19]. Part of a framework proposed in Vaidya et al [100], AODV with multiple alternative paths (AODV-MAP) is a multipath version of AODV. The routing technique is based on the establishment of multiple paths with three different qualifications.…”

“…They present relative service differentiation concept to support VoIP like applications in ad hoc networks. In cite [10] Vaidya et al propose a framework for voice communication over multipath wireless mobile ad hoc network, in which ad hoc routing protocol and scalable audio coding are used. Zhang et al have researched the performance of voice transportation in wireless ad hoc networks and proposed an adaptive source network rate control scheme to adapt the voice coding bit rate to the available network bandwidth in order to maximize the quality of voice [11].…”
