Investigating the influence of absorptive capacity of recipients within cross-border transfer of knowledge: evidence from emerging markets

Abstract: PurposeThis study aims to investigate whether the absorptive capacity, learning intent of the recipient, the attractiveness of the knowledge source and the relationship quality between the recipient and the source in high-technology sectors in emerging markets influences the nature of the intra-organizational knowledge being transferred.Design/methodology/approachA total of 180 completed survey responses from all cellular network providers operating in Pakistan were analyzed. This study uses multiple regressio… Show more

“…Market adaptabilities and innovation performances are strictly correlated not only with firms' capacity to activate KIIMAs, but especially with the strength of engagement in the collaboration (Davcik and Sharma, 2016). This aspect also highlights that the absorptive capacity for knowledge-intensive activities is an organizational combination of internal technology knowledge creation and collaborative market orientation processes for external knowledge acquisition (Cadogan, 2012; Lichtenthaler, 2016; Mehreen et al , 2021).…”

“…First, the technical knowledge difference of collaboration participants has a significant inverted U-shaped moderating effect on the relationship between absorptive capacity and knowledge transfer performance. As Chen et al [5] pointed out, if the technical knowledge difference among the partner difference of IUR collaborations is too large, even if the enterprises have strong absorption capacity, they will eventually be unable to digest and use the valuable knowledge from the other side effectively because of the huge knowledge gap, leading to a poor knowledge transfer effect [84,85]. Similarly, if the technical knowledge differences are too small, this indicates that the knowledge depth and knowledge structure of universities and research institutes lack complementarity for enterprises [86,87].…”

“…By their very nature, service firms rely on the transfer of knowledge within their organizational network to achieve competitive advantage (Ashok et al , 2016; Ganguly et al , 2019; Garrick and Chan, 2017). The transfer can be particularly challenging across national boundaries due to institutional differences (Guo et al , 2020) or the disseminative and absorptive capacity of the knowledge sources and recipients (Mehreen et al , 2021).…”
