Investigating the effect of well geometry on the daylight performance in the adjoining spaces of vertical top-lit atrium buildings

Abstract: This study investigated the impact of well geometry on the amount of daylight availability in the adjoining spaces around atria with vertical top-lit forms under overcast sky condition in Malaysia. The daylight levels in the central south office rooms were derived from scale model measurements, and predictions from the lighting simulation program Radiance in Integrated Environmental Solution <Virtual Environment>. A comparison of measured data and simulations has validated Radiance simulations of atrium … Show more

“…This paper employed the Radiance tool through Integrated Environmental Solution Virtual Environment (IES-VE) software to investigate daylighting performances of various interior layouts. IES-VE, as a multifunctional simulation software, can analyze energy efficiency in buildings from the preliminary stages of design [28]. The Radiance-IES simulation engine generates high-quality daylight modelling images compared to other daylight simulation tools [29].…”

“…Radiance simulation engine in IES<VE> (Integrated Environmental Solution<Virtual Environment>) was used to evaluate daylight performances of various interior design parameters. IES<VE> is a multifunctional software to simulate green buildings and analyse energy efficiency in buildings from the preliminary phases of design [43,44]. Radiance-IES is a prominent daylighting performance tool used by specialists in different fields, such as architects, engineers, etc., that could be integrated with other simulation tools [45,46].…”

“…Previous research showed that the Radiance-IES is the most comprehensive daylight simulation engine, compared with several daylight simulation programs, to measure quantitative and also qualitative performances of daylight in buildings [41]. Several studies on daylighting for tropical regions also used the Radiance-IES program [24,40,42,43].…”
