“…Some of the more commonly used elicited complaint data collection methods include: i) role-plays (Kasper & Rose, 2002;Lee, 2013;Martínez-Flor, 2013;Nava & Pedrazzini, 2011;Yuan, 2001), ii) written discourse completion tasks (Bikmen & Marti, 2013;Geluykens & Kraft, 2003;Mofidi & Shoushtari, 2012;Sheykh & Esmaeili, 2015), and, to a lesser extent, iii) oral discourse completion tasks (Gallaher, 2014;Murphy & Neu, 1996) First, role-plays are a commonly used experimental data collection method in speech act research (Martínez-Flor, 2013;Nava & Pedrazzini, 2011;Yuan, 2001 with plays that persist over several turns (Kasper & Rose, 2002). Role-plays are beneficial in interlanguage pragmatics research because the situations are made to mirror real-life situations, which can trigger the production of various speech acts.…”
