Continuous economic growth and the rise in energy consumption are linked with environmental pollution. Demand for health care expenditure increased after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is interesting in modeling the nexus between public and private health expenditure, carbon dioxide emissions, and economic growth. To this end, the present study analyzed the nexus between public and private health care expenditure, economic growth, and environmental pollution for 36 Asian countries for the period 1991–2017. FMOLS, GMM, and quantile regression analysis confirm the EKC hypothesis in Asia. Besides, FMOLS and quantile regressions reached the reducing effects of government and private health expenditures on CO 2 emissions. While quantile regression results show that public and private health expenditures can mitigate CO 2 emissions; however, these results differ for various levels of CO 2 . Findings of quantile regression show a significant impact of both public and private health expenditures in reducing CO 2 at the 50 th and 75 th quantiles but results are insignificant for the 25 th quantile. Overall, the paper concludes that both government and private health sectors’ expenditures caused CO 2 emissions to decrease in Asia and that the negative impact of the private health sector on CO 2 emissions is greater than that of the government health sector. The concluding remark is that the higher the health spending, the higher the environmental quality will be in Asia. Hence, the health administrators need to increase public and private health expenditures with an effective cost-service and energy-efficient management approach to reach sustainable health services and a sustainable environment in Asia. The aim of the paper is to apply the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) model in order to explore the link between economic complexity index (ECI) and carbon emissions, in 25 selected European Union (EU) countries from 1995–2017. The study examines a cointegrating polynomial regression (CPR) for a panel data framework as well as for simple time series of individual countries. In the model is also included the variable ‘energy intensity’ as main determinant of carbon emissions. Depending on economic complexity, the CO2 emissions pattern was found to exhibit an inverted U-shaped curve: in the initial phase, pollution increases when countries augment the complexity of the products they export using and after a turning point the rise of economic complexity suppress the pollutant emissions. The panel cointegration test indicates a long-run relationship between economic complexity, energy intensity and carbon emissions. It was also found that a rise of 10% of energy intensity would lead to a 3.9% increase in CO2 emissions. The quadratic model incorporating ECI is validated for the whole panel as well as for six countries (Belgium, France, Italy, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom). The graphical representation of the EKC in these countries is discussed. Policy implications are also included.

The development of more effective environmental policies is a common concern among scholars, government and the public. This paper attempts to investigate whether the environmental policy mix can really work. Taking the “Five Water Co-Treatment” policy of Zhejiang Province as an example, we applied the synthetic control method to examine the impact of multi-objective environmental policies on industrial sewage discharge and urban sewage discharge in Zhejiang. Further, we analyzed the effect of industrial value added and the length of water pipelines on sewage discharge and examined the potential environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) relationships. Our results of synthetic control imply that the “Five Water Co-Treatment” policy has increased the industrial and urban sewage discharge. However, the results of the extended analysis show that this is a process of standardizing sewage discharge and an embodiment of enhanced sewage treatment capacity. Therefore, we believe that the “Five Water Co-Treatment” policy is effective and should continue to advance.
