“…These findings suggest that OA is involved in the onset of fractures resulting from OP. Conversely, Roux et al reported that intervertebral disc space narrowing and osteophytes decreased the prevalence of VFx in postmenopausal women with OP [35]. In the present study, there was no significant association between the presence of lumbar OA and future occurrence of lumbar OP and VFx.…”

“…Some findings from cross-sectional [2] and longitudinal [3,4] studies have shown the coexistence of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis or even an unexpected increased risk of vertebral fractures in patients with spondyloarthritis [5,6]. In this last scenario, however, few radiology-based studies have been reported [5][6][7][8][9][10][11]; most of these have included postmenopausal women and have analyzed only the lumbar spine, with a paucity of data on the thoracic spine.…”

“…Other reports have not shown any association between osteophytosis and vertebral fracture [9,10]. Similarly, disc space narrowing (DSN) seems to be more consistently related to vertebral fractures [5,11], but an inverse association has also been reported [8]. Finally, studies analyzing the relationship between spinal osteoarthritis and vertebral fracture in men are scarce [6,9,10].…”

“…Several investigators have examined the coexistence of osteoporosis and spondylosis in the spine and have reported an inverse relation between decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and intervertebral disc degeneration. 8,10,11 Previous studies revealed that an increase in BMD is related with increasing osteophyte and end plate sclerosis grade though not with disc space narrowing. Adjusting for body mass index (BMI) and physical activity does not influence the strength of the association.…”
