Inventory of Chondrichthyes and Actinopterygii species collected in the central coast of São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: This biodiversity inventory of the central coast of Sã o Paulo State presents species of demersal and pelagic fishes of Santos Bay, Bertioga Channel, and adjacent continental shelf, between São Sebastiã o and Peruíbe, from the coast till a depth of 100 m. Samples were taken during oceanographic campaigns using otter trawls, between November 2004 and February 2006. A total of 56,095 individuals were collected, belonging to the classes Chondrichthyes (three orders and fourteen species) and Actinopterygii (fiftee… Show more

“…The Bertioga Channel is a multi-use area, considered a secondary connection to the ocean of the estuarine system of Santos -São Vicente, which suffers intense pressure from pollution, habitat alteration and overfishing DIAS, 2015). In spite of few months of sampling and a restricted area, the results are consistent and qualified the north outflow of the Bertioga Channel as moderately disturbed.…”

“…To the same area, ROCHA and DIAS (2015), using only otter-trawling samples, added fifteen species to the inventory of BARBANTI et al, (2013). On the other hand, PORCARO et al (2014) described the distribution of the sciaenid larvae in the estuarine system and adjacent continental shelf off Santos, highlighting the region as a Sciaenidae spawning area.…”

“…Compared to the other species, E. melanopterus had the highest RB accumulation in both zones of the Paraiba River Estuary, indicating the lower MXR activity and, therefore, a possible vulnerability of this species to pollution in the estuary. Nonetheless, E. melanopterus composes the fish fauna of estuaries with high levels of pollution (Cortellete et al, ; Falcão et al, ; Rocha & Dias, ), which underscore the need to study this fish regarding its susceptibility to pollution. The same is true for other species analyzed in the present study, such as B. soporator, S. greeley , and E. argenteus , for which no studies are addressing this matter.…”
