Invasive recurrence of serous borderline ovarian tumor as multifocal lymphadenopathy 25years after initial diagnosis

Abstract: ► We present the case with the latest reported recurrence of low malignant potential ovarian tumor. ► Borderline ovarian tumors have the potential for delayed recurrence that is not always salvageable surgically. ► Optimization of surveillance strategies and lifelong follow up is required for these patients.

“…A characteristic feature of mucinous ovarian tumor is the presence of a morphological continuum with benign, borderline and malignant lesions occurring simultaneously. This tumor heterogeneity is thought to reflect the nature of its biological progression . Ovarian IECA, which is the equivalence of an ovarian precancerous lesion or an ovarian carcinoma in situ, is thought to be a transitional stage in the process of malignant transformation from MBOTs to mucinous carcinoma.…”

However, the clinical prognoses of these diseases are greatly different.…”

“…Serous borderline/atypical proliferative serous tumour (SBT/APST) can present at a high stage, with nodal metastasis and a low risk of transformation to low‐grade serous carcinoma (LGSC) . Histological features of nodal involvement by LGSC and/or its precursor SBT/APST have been described, but literature on the cytological features is sparse. One case report briefly illustrates recurrent SBT/APST as multifocal lymphadenopathy but does not describe the cytomorphology in detail .…”

One case report briefly illustrates recurrent SBT/APST as multifocal lymphadenopathy but does not describe the cytomorphology in detail . With cyto‐histological correlation, we illustrate a case of nodal low‐grade serous pelvic neoplasia, highlighting previously undescribed cytomorphological features, which may give clues to the diagnosis, thereby raising awareness of these rare nodal lesions…”
