Introduction to some species of Argulus (Crustacea: Branchiura), parasitic infections in the freshwater fishes

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The ectoparasitic are frequently found on various species of freshwater fishes. Species of genus Argulus are common and important parasites of freshwater fishes. These species are temporary parasites of fish and cannot survive without a host for long period. Many studies reported the transmission of Argulus species through freshwater fishes worldwide. The aim of this study is to review previous information on Argulus species, parasitic infections in freshwater fishes. The present study suggests that t… Show more

“…Argulus parasites are morphologically broad, oval, and flat on both sides (Radkhah 2017) covered by chi-tosan carapace (Figure 1). They have a part called the maxilla, which usually acts as a powerful suctorial organ and is adapted for suction during feeding (Poly 2005).…”

“…Parasitic infections have been raised as one of the most important problems in the aquaculture sector (Radkhah 2017) that can lead to reduced growth and vital activity of the fish and even its death. The outbreak of ectoparasites not only directly leads to the death of fish, but also impairs their growth and reproduction and predisposes them to bacterial and fungal infections (Pulkkinen et al 2010;Lafferty et al 2015;Assefa and Abunna 2018).…”

“…Here, we examined the impact of temperature on one of the most common Eurasian freshwater fish lice, Argulus foliaceus (see Radkhah 2017), before infection, during establishment and post-infection. Specifically, we aimed to identify changes in parasite hatching, growth and survival on and off the host.…”
