E-mail: mbaaka2gm@gmail.comThe study evaluated the effect of sub-lethal concentration of phostoxin on Clarias gariepinus juveniles. C. gariepinus juveniles belonging to the same cohort (40.1±1.2g; 18.1±1.1cm) from a commercial fish farm were randomly placed ten in each of 15 plastic tanks containing 15 liters of water. They were exposed for 96 hrs to three sub-lethal concentrations (treatments) of phostoxin (0.125, 0.250, 0.5mg L -1 ) and a phostoxin free control. At the end of 96 hrs exposure, they were dissected and the tissues need for histopathology removed and fixed in Bouin's fluid. The gill filament exhibited fusion at the secondary lamella that was progressive with concentration. At the highest concentration of exposure, the secondary lamellae showed marked pyknotic and necrotic changes characterized by epithelia detachment. The hepatic tissue showed mild inflammatory changes at lower concentrations while at the highest concentration of exposure there was marked inflammation with observed hydropic degeneration. In the kidney, an inflammatory change was only observed in the interstices at the highest dose of exposure with the convoluted tubules showing partial shrinkage. Phostoxin showed to have significantly caused alterations in cyto-architecture of the gills and to a considerable extent liver and kidney of C. gariepinus.

Information related to the diet of one species always contributes to the knowledge of its bionomy and the functioning of the ecosystem in which the species lives. Therefore, understanding the feeding ecology of one fish population and its ontogenetic, spatial and temporal aspects help to understand the structure of fish assemblages and river communities. Knowledge of this structure is essential for habitat management and biodiversity conservation. The feeding ecology of Deuterodon langei Travassos, 1957 was studied through analyses of diet composition, sharing of resources, feeding strategy and contribution of food items to the width of its niche. The analysis included an assessment of ontogenetic, spatial and seasonal variations. The species was considered omnivorous with great plasticity caused by seasonal variation in food availability throughout the river basin, but mainly through ontogeny. The diet of smaller individuals revealed a predominance of insects and other arthropods, while the diet of larger specimens showed allochthonous plant items as the main components. The low intestinal quotient (IQ) values for the smaller individuals were accounted for their mainly insectivorous diet. The greater relative length of the intestine can account for the greater plasticity of the adult diet, enabling them to use diet items of larger size and more difficult digestion, such as plant items. Therefore, shifts in feeding ecology during growth are confirmed in this omnivorous tropical river fish, strengthening the concept that, when comparing food habits among species, fish size must be taken into account. This study also provides needed information regarding the feeding ecology of fishes intrinsically associated with the Atlantic rainforest, one of the most threatened and biodiverse ecosystems of the planet.Informações relacionadas à alimentação de uma espécie contribuem para o conhecimento de sua bionomia e funcionamento do ecossistema no qual ela vive. Desta forma, entender a ecologia alimentar de uma população de peixes e seus aspectos ontogenéticos, temporais e espaciais auxiliam na compreensão da assembléia de peixes e de toda a comunidade de um rio. Reconhecer tal estrutura é fundamental para o manejo e conservação da biodiversidade do habitat. A ecologia alimentar de Deuterodon langei Travassos, 1957 foi analisada por meio da composição da dieta, partilha de recursos, estratégia alimentar e contribuição dos itens alimentares para o nicho alimentar. As análises incluem uma abordagem das variações ontogenéticas, espaciais e temporais. RESUMO:Espécies não nativas causam danos imprevisíveis sobre os ecossistemas e são consideradas pela IUCN como a segunda maior causa mundial de perda de biodiversidade. Os ecossistemas aquáticos são particularmente vulneráveis a esse impacto e muitas pesquisas mostram que essas espécies não nativas podem alterar a composição das comunidades nativas. A proposta deste estudo é apresentar as principais causas de introduções de espécies em ecossistemas aquáticos e possíveis medidas de prevenção e controle de espécies invasoras. Em ambientes aquáticos destacam-se como causas de introduções: destruição de barreiras geográficas como construções de reservatórios e canais de transposição de rios; criação e melhoria dos estoques naturais, devido à falta de planejamento na construção e manutenção dos locais de criação; aquariofilia e ornamentação de paisagens. Além disso, o turismo através da pesca esportiva, o controle biológico na tentativa de exterminar outra espécie já introduzida, a fauna associada a qual é transportada junto com a água, substratos ou hospedeiros e água de lastro principalmente proveniente de navios mercantis, também contribuem para as introduções de espécies. Medidas de controle de espécies não nativas são escassas e a identificação de vetores, monitoramento, políticas públicas e estudos são algumas estratégias que podem ajudar a diminuir os impactos ambientais causados por espécies não nativas em ecossistemas aquáticos. A divulgação e orientação sobre os impactos ambientais causados por espécies não nativas direcionadas para a população leiga e científica faz-se necessário, sendo a Internet uma ferramenta imprescindível e prioritária no combate a espécies não nativas.
