Effects of acute and sub-lethal concentration of Datura stramonium on growth and some haematological indices on fingerlings of Clarias gariepinus were investigated. Acute lethal toxicity (LC50) of D. stramonium leaves extracts for 48 hours exposures of C. gariepinus were determined at 0.2 ml/L. Clarias gariepinus fingerlings (4.22±0.01g) were exposed to D. stramonium at 0.00, 0.002, 0.02 and 0.2 ml/L for 28 daysand 10 days withdrawal. Each treatment was stocked 20 fish per replicate and replicated twice. Growth indices, haematological parameters, and histology were determined. The result shows a general increase within the weightgain among the treatments but the value decreases as the concentration of D. stramonium increases. The haematological response to D. stramonium exposures was very variable relative to the exposed concentration. Theresult obtained after 10 days withdrawal of haematology was relatively almost like the values obtained within the control and before the experiment. Histology revealed the gills, liver and intestines of C. gariepinus for the control shows no lesions, while the exposed groups recorded like moderate lamellar atrophy, and moderate diffuse hepatocellular degeneration. The results indicate that the exposure to sub-lethal levels of D. stramonium impacted on the growth, blood profiles, and histology of the exposed fish.

This study investigated the toxic effects of Datura stramonium leaves extract on growth, histopathology and blood profiles of Oreochromis niloticus juveniles. Datura stramonium leaves extract of various concentrations were prepared at 0.00 (control), 0.002, 0.02 and 0.2 ml/L for 28 days and 10 days withdrawal in triplicate. Twenty (20) Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings (6.05±0.01g) were randomly distributed into each experimental bowl containing 45 L of treatment concentrations. Biological evaluation, blood profiles parameters, and histology of the exposed fish were determined. The result shows an increase within the weight gain and the weight gain was higher in the exposed groups expect TAL 4 than the control. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) among the treatments. The haematological response to D. stramonium exposures shows that the values of packed cell volume and haemoglobin were higher in the exposed groups compared to the control while the white blood cell, neutrophils, and lymphocytes decrease as the concentration of the plant increases and were lower than the control. The result revealed a higher value of total protein and albumin in the exposed groups compared to the control. There were decreased in the values of ALT and AST when compared to the control and the values of total protein, albumin, ALT and AST after 10 days of withdrawal show a similar trend in values obtained before the experiment. The result of histopathology shows no observable lesions were observed in control group while there were moderate alterations in gills, liver and the intestine of the exposed groups. This investigation revealed that continuous use of the D. stramonium leaves extract in the aquatic environment will affects the growth, blood profiles and histopathology of the exposed fish.

Clarias gariepinus fry numbering four hundred and fifty, were stocked in nine concrete tanks. Stocking density was fifty fry per 2 X 2 X 1 metre square tank. The duration for the experiment was three hundred and sixty-five (365) days. Feeding with the hormone ended at 365 days from which normal feeding without the use of the hormone commenced for another 365 days. Clarias gariepinus. fry were fed 0.2mm coppens feed mixed with 17α-Methyltestosterone (MT) at 10% of the fish' body weight from start of the experiment till they were one month old. Subsequently, fish were fed 0.8mm coppens feed from two months old till three months old. Feeding was administered at 10% of the fish' body weight. Clarias gariepinus fish were fed 2mm coppens at four months old. Feeding was also done at 10% of the fish' body weight. 6mm coppens feed was administered to fishes from five months old till twelve months at 5% of the fish' body weight. Thereafter, fish were fed 5% of the fish' body weight for another 365 days. Mean initial weights ranged from 0.053g to 0.065g. Mean final weights ranged from 6.7g to 8.8g. Liver weights for the CLA50 treatments ranged from 3.7g to 8.0g for the male Clarias gariepinus; while the female Clarias gariepinus also in the CLA50 treatment showed liver weights of 4.0g to 12.6g. The CLA100 treatments showed the following weights for the male Clarias gariepinus and the female Clarias gariepinus under the study -6.6g to 14.2g and 5.9g to 18.2g respectively. There were three treatments under study: CLA50, CLA100, CLA0. Treatments were triplicated.
