Si la figure de la mère est abjecte – à en croire sa propension à emprisonner sa progéniture dans une dyade mortifère –, elle a parfois aussi des conséquences sur un autre angle du triangle familial : le père. Démis de ses fonctions, violeur ou surpuissant, ce dernier pèche soit par le « trop-peu » (absence, indifférence), soit par le « trop-plein » (abus d’autorité, inceste), pour reprendre les termes de Lori Saint-Martin. Afin de définir les impacts de sa défaillance, nous tiendrons compte de quatre paires textes/films portant sur la figure du père, souvent éludée avant que ne s’ouvrent ces récits de filiation. À travers Littoral (Mouawad 1999 ; 2004) ; Le sexe des étoiles (Proulx 1987 ; Baillargeon 1993) ; La petite fille qui aimait trop les allumettes (Soucy 1998 ; Lavoie 2017) et C’est le coeur qui meurt en dernier (Lalonde 2013 ; Durand-Brault 2017), nous étudions différentes strates de la narration filmique, en deçà ou au-delà de ce qui est offert par les hypotextes, cernant les contours du père défaillant ainsi que ses conséquences sur l’identité des narrateurs et narratrices.
