The effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) on staphylococcal arthritis has not been successfully evaluated to date. A suitable animal model has been developed to investigate a possible correlation. Using 16 rabbits divided into four groups, we injected the knee joints of two groups with Staphylococcus aureus and the other two with NaCl. One group in each of the two treatment groups was also injected with SOD. Blood samples and samples of joint fluid were taken at 12 hour intervals. Lipids were measured in plasma and joint fluid. The joints were examined macroscopically and microscopically using a scoring system to quantitate the deterioration of joint structures. Lipid peroxide concentrations measured in plasma differed in each of the groups, with higher values found in animals with septic arthritis compared with controls. The estimations made of lipid peroxide in joint fluid also displayed extreme variability, with the highest values found in animals with Staphylococcal arthritis treated with SOD. Histological examination also verified that the infected joints injected with SOD showed significantly more inflammation, a higher amount of bacteria in the joint cavity, and more distinct joint damage than joints injected only with bacteria. The mechanisms responsible for this SOD effect remain to be determined.

“…Orgotein attenuates the release of free radicals in the synovial fluid of RA patients and has shown promising results as a therapeutic agent in patients with RA and OA (25,26). For instance, in patients with active classic RA affecting the knee, intraarticular injections of Orgotein ameliorated the signs and symptoms, as evidenced by improvement in the RA activity index (morning stiffness, flexion range, pain, walking time), decrease in the level of rheumatoid factor (26), reduced intake of rescue acetaminophen, and overall improvement in physician's and patient's global assessment of disease activity (27). Clinical studies of Orgotein in patients with OA also revealed amelioration of signs and symptoms (28).…”

In quasi tutti i casi si tratterebbe, comunque, di manovre chirurgiche più che di vere e proprie punture articolari, che invece si renderanno pienamente applicabili solo nel XIX secolo con l'utilizzo sempre più diffuso di aghi cavi -peraltro già da tempo impiegati in procedure oftalmologiche (5) -e l'in-L' introduzione di sostanze medicamentose all'interno della cavità articolare, per la cura locale di molte reumoartropatie, è pratica relativamente recente, che ebbe il suo inizio, come vedremo, circa due secoli fa. È assai probabile che in tempi precedenti ci si limitasse ad evacuare l'articolazione tumefatta, con l'obiettivo di risolvere la discrasia umorale all'origine, secondo i principi della teoria ippocratica allora dominante, di qualsiasi malattia reumatica (gotta, artrite, reumatismo), senza aggiungere alcun principio terapeutico (1).
