Intraoral lipomas: A clinicopathological study of 43 cases, including four cases of spindle cell/pleomorphic subtype

Abstract: Background: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate radiologically, the relation between the distance from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the facial bone crest (FBC), and the facial alveolar bone (FAB) width at maxillary anterior teeth. A further aim was to assess if the CEJ-FBC distance had an impact in the prevalence to find a FAB thickness greater than one mm. Study design: CBCT images were retrospectively obtained from the database of the Oral Surgery Unit of the University of Valenc… Show more

“…Mean size ranges from 1.1 to 3.0 cm and they are virtually always asymptomatic ( 1 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 8 , 10 , 12 , 14 ). Although there seems to be no gender predilection for intraoral lipomas, most studies show a female ( 1 , 3 , 5 , 6 - 8 , 12 , 13 ) rather than male ( 2 , 4 , 9 , 11 ) predilection. Mean age of the affected patients is usually on the 6th to 7th decades of life and most patients are in their fourties to sixties ( 1 , 3 - 12 , 14 ).…”

“…Lipomas can be histologically classified into different types depending on the admixture of mesenchymal elements such as fibrolipomas, fibromyolipomas, osteolipoma, intramuscular lipoma, angiolipoma, salivary gland lipoma, spindle cell/ pleomorphic lipoma, chondrolipoma or myxoid lipoma 1,2,4,6,8 . Lipomas and fibrolipomas account for approximately 80% of all lipomas, followed by intramuscular lipomas and spindle cell lipomas 1,2,12 . One of the rarest of the variants is angiofibropilopma which was initially grouped under harmatoma 11 .…”
