Intraoral fluoride levels after use of conventional and high-fluoride dentifrices

Abstract: A dentifrice with high fluoride concentration could be regarded as a useful therapy of F delivery for high caries-risk patients, since intraoral F levels were sustained throughout most of the day after using this formulation.

“…group that did not. These findings are in line with studies by Bayrak, Okte and Fidanci 1 assessing primary and permanent dentitions and Pearce et al 23 assessing permanent dentition. However, they do not corroborate the results obtained by Gaugler and Bruton 6 (1982) and Dos Santos et al 17 Compared to the study of Dos Santos et al 17 the caries diagnosis criteria used in their study did not include ECL.…”

“…High‐fluoride dentifrice is able to significantly increase intraoral F levels, and it has been used to control caries in root dentine. This substrate is more susceptible to demineralisation than enamel and requires higher concentrations of fluoride to control de‐remineralisation processes .…”

“…1 Concerning the approaches of fluoride use, fluoridated dentifrice is the most rational, 10 because it associates the mechanical disorganisation of biofilm with the preventive and therapeutic interference of F, 11,12 due tothe maintenance of F levels in biofilm [13][14][15] for up to 10 hours or more after brushing. 14 High-fluoride dentifrice is able to significantly increase intraoral F levels, [16][17][18] and it has been used to control caries in root dentine. This substrate is more susceptible to demineralisation than enamel and requires higher concentrations of fluoride to control de-remineralisation processes.…”

“…Entre los elementos de aplicación tópica están las cremas dentales con flúor, consideradas un medio eficaz en la remoción mecánica de placa bacteriana y una forma de mantener las concentraciones de flúor disponibles en la saliva, en el biofilme y en la estructura dentaria que evitan los procesos de desmineralización. Además de ser la forma más usada y aceptada por la población mundial para el control de la caries dental y la enfermedad periodontal del esmalte [2].…”
