Intraocular lens as a drug delivery reservoir

Abstract: The use of IOLs as drug delivery reservoirs appears to show great promise. Although excellent results with therapeutic potential have been reported in experimental animal studies, further studies are needed to reach clinical use.

“…Among them, the use of biodegradable polymeric implants to deliver a sustained drug level in the eye recently has become a topic of interest. [2][3][4][5][6] A biodegradable implant is a matrix containing a biodegradable polymer, typically constructed from a synthetic aliphatic polyester of the poly-a-hydroxy acid family, such as polylactic acid (PLA), poly[d,l-lactide-co-glycolide] (PLGA) or poly[d,llactide-co-e-caprolactone] (PLC). 4 All are proven vehicles for sustained drug release.…”

“…One way of solving this problem is based on developing a new generation of intraocular lenses (IOL) loaded with ophthalmic drugs that release the postoperative treatment into the eye [5][6][7][8][9][10] in a sustained and controlled way. This could eliminate the need for topical treatment and the risks associated with inadequate treatment compliance; it also increases the effectiveness of the medication as there is a constant and controlled intraocular release of the drugs.…”
