Intramural Metastasis as a Risk Factor for Recurrence in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: IM could be an important prognostic factor, along with anatomic determinants such as the TNM staging system, in patients with ESCC. Effective preoperative evaluation and postoperative surveillance may help improve the outcome of patients with ESCC, particularly when accompanied by IM.

“…Zhang et al 29 discovered that higher T stage, higher N stage, and poor tumor differentiation grade were positively related to bone metastases in initial bladder cancer. Similar conclusion was drawn in the study conducted by Moon 30 . In patients with DM, multivariate Cox analysis showed that tumor grade, age at diagnosis, T stage, N stage, marital status, and the administration of surgery was a prognostic factor for OS.…”

“…Similar conclusion was drawn in the study conducted by Moon. 30 In patients with DM, multivariate Cox analysis showed that tumor grade, age at diagnosis, T stage, N stage, marital status, and the administration of surgery was a prognostic factor for OS. Many previous studies have found that age at diagnosis, T stage, N stage, and tumor differentiation played important roles in cancer survival outcomes.…”

“…However, there is a possibility of intramural metastasis from transverse colon cancer to the appendix; therefore, awareness of our rare case of intramural metastasis is important. Intramural metastasis is considered an important factor predicting poor prognosis in esophageal [3,8,9], gastric [2], and rectal [5] cancers. Although there is a lack of consensus regarding treatment strategies, intramural metastasis might also be a poor prognostic factor in metastasis from colon cancer to the appendix.…”

“…Recurrence of an esophagogastric anastomotic stricture is more likely to occur <2 years after esophagectomy ( 3 , 18 , 19 ) and it may be related to metastasis to lymph nodes and intramural metastasis of esophageal cancer ( 20 ). Rasihashemi and colleagues ( 21 ) reported that the anastomotic type is related to benign stenosis, but not to recurrent stenosis.…”
