Intralesional corticosteroid injection in addition to endoscopic balloon dilation in a dog with benign oesophageal strictures

Abstract: A three-year-old female spayed Golden retriever presented with a two-week history of regurgitation due to oesophageal stricture formation. Further diagnostics revealed two oesophageal strictures located at the thoracic inlet and caudal to the heart base, respectively. Endoscopic balloon dilation was performed four times at weekly intervals but recurrence of stricture formation was noted clinically within a few days after each procedure and was confirmed endoscopically. Finally, intralesional injection of triam… Show more

“…The successful use of the technique has also been described in small animals (Fraune et al . ). The tendency of some oesophageal strictures to persist or recur has been attributed to the continuous inflammatory response to injury and the resultant collagen formation in the submucosa and muscular layers of the oesophagus, which leads to scar contracture.…”

“…In case of urethral stricture, one to three sessions have been reported (Bennet and others 2005, Powers and others 2010), and for oesophageal stricture, the number of procedures may vary from one to five sessions (Leib and others 2001). Triamcinolone injections within the stenotic area could reduce the risk of postballooning stricture (Webb and others 2007, Fraune and others 2009). Corticosteroids reduce inflammation, collagen deposition and scar tissue formation and prevent recurrence of scarring-induced contraction in humans (Kochhar and others 1999).…”

“…Corticosteroids reduce inflammation, collagen deposition and scar tissue formation and prevent recurrence of scarring-induced contraction in humans (Kochhar and others 1999). Intralesional injection of corticosteroids associated with balloon dilation of an oesophageal stricture prevented recurrence in 1 dog (Fraune and others 1999) and improved or resolved clinical signs of rectal stricture in 14 dogs (Webb and others 2007). The dog in this study did show significant progressive clinical improvement after each balloon dilation, with final disappearance of the stricture.…”
