Intracystic Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Breast: A Challenging Diagnosis

Abstract: We report a case of a 36-year-old woman that presented with a painful mass in the outer quadrants of the left breast that had grown rapidly. Physical examination revealed a well circumscribed elastic mass and breast ultrasound showed a cyst measuring 26 mm with vegetation growing on the inner wall. Microscopic evaluation, after fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), suggested benign lesion. “…Primary SCC of the breast is a rare tumour, accounting for an estimated frequency of 0.1-3.6% of all invasive breast cancers with poor clinical outcomes [9][10][11]. Skin or nipple cancer and metastasis sites should be excluded when SCC is diagnosed [12]. The clinical symptoms of implant-associated SCC are likely to be a primary mammary tumour, and the histological appearance is important to make the diagnosis [13,14].…”

“…The neoplastic cells infiltrate the adjacent stroma and an increase in size occurs on follow-up. Among the reported cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the breast, the diagnosis using FNAS was different: benignity or malignancy [11,12]. This difference was caused by the difficultly in the evaluation of the atypia of squamous epithelium, and so if RCBM is used for such tumors, it provides a precise evaluation of the atypical status of squamous epithelium and relationship between the atypical epithelium and stroma, leading to a precise diagnosis.…”
