Abstract:New technologies applied to visible diode lasers allow stabilization of an extended-cavity system using an internal iodine cell.Preliminary results at wavelengths around 633 nm are encouraging and show that such systems may some day replace the He-Ne lasers now used as frequency standards. The tunability of the diode lasers makes it possible to access iodine transitions which absorb more strongly than those usually used with He-Ne lasers.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
