Intra‐hospital dissemination of clinical and environmental isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia from Tehran

Abstract: Significance and Impact of the Study: A wide genetic diversity of S. maltophilia strains from the clinical and environmental sources was found. The small clusters of common pulsotypes (PTs) in the clinical settings were identified which indicates the existence of a common source for S. maltophilia to disseminate between different wards. The transmission of S. maltophilia among the environment and the patients within a hospital was confirmed by the shared genotypes among the environmental and clinical isolates.… Show more

“…The clustering of strains from the same source into different branches indicated the clonal diversity of S. maltophilia in these two regions. The high genetic diversity of S. maltophilia strains in this study is consistent with previous studies from Tehran and Iran ( Bostanghadiri et al 2019 ; Kardan-Yamchi et al 2021 ). Most notably, strains from Tongliao and Changchun gathering into the common clonal clusters I and II imply the presence of a common source of S. maltophilia and dissemination between the two regions ( Fig.…”

“…They provided evidence of the potential transmission between cow farms in northeast China. Previous studies have confirmed intra-hospital dissemination of S. maltophilia between the clinic and the environment ( Kardan-Yamchi et al 2021 ). In 2018, Kim et al (2018) verified the high levels of similarity of environmental S. maltophilia isolates to clinical isolates and provided evidence that WWTPs may be the source of S. maltophilia spread to community and clinical settings.…”

“…Apart from this small group of above-mentioned 21 isolates, molecular genotyping revealed no other epidemiological incidents in both groups of hospitalized patients and outpatients. Recently, some data has been published showing the transmission of S. maltophilia strains not only between patients but also via items such as taps and beds in hospital wards [ 2 , 28 , 41 ]. PFGE and MLST genotyping were performed on 21 clinical isolates (from blood and urine) and 9 environmental isolates of S. maltophilia recovered from faucets in the emergency department in a Mexican tertiary care hospital.…”
