Intra-abdominal migration of a k-wire during revision total hip arthroplasty

Abstract: Revision total hip arthroplasty in the setting of severe acetabular bone loss is a challenging problem that is becoming more common. Kirschner wires are often used during acetabular revision for temporary fixation of trial components. We describe an intraoperative migration of a Kirschner wire through the acetabulum into the peritoneal cavity, requiring acute laparoscopic removal.

“…To prevent this complication, it is recommended that the wires to be left visible outside the skin when possible, and their ends bent when direct visualization is not possible, and be removed when no longer needed. A single case report of intraoperative K-wire migration due to direct mechanical force with a real risk of compromise to multiple vascular and soft tissue structures requiring acute laparotomy has been documented following revision total hip arthroplasty [13].…”

“…После определения локализации сместившейся конструкции встает вопрос о способе ее удаления. В большинстве наблюдений в равной степени применялись как открытые [2, 5, 9], так и эндоскопические вмешательства [26]. Так, М. Cohen с соавторами при удалении спицы из мочевого пузыря использовали лапаротомический доступ [5].…”
