(1) Dans le domaine des recherches concernant le Nouveau Testament au cours des deux dernières décennies, un grand rôle a été joué par la thèse de la diversification de la christologie primitive. Contrairement à l'affirmation plus ancienne de Wilhelm Bousset sur l'origine pagano-chrétienne du titre Kyrios-Seigneur et aux théories plus anciennes sur l'évolution dialectique du jeune christianisme soutenues par l'ecole de Töbingen, il est symptomatique pour la situation actuelle qu'on suppose une origine indépendante des divers motifs, titres et idées qui ont influencé la façon de penser de l'eglise primitive. En résumant les résultats de ce travail, il faut compter au moins avec les types suivants de la réfléxion christologique: Dans un domaine, Jésus a été attendu comme un personnage apocalyptique (le plus souvent comme le Fils de l'homme) qui viendra pour juger a la fin du monde prévue pour bientôt (Lc. 12, 8s, Mc. 14, 62, 1 Th. 4, 16, cf. 1 Co. 16, 22, etc.); dans un autre milieu rassemblant les sentences de Jésus, il a été conçu comme la sagesse incorporée qui survit dans ses paroles (Mt. 11, 19; 12, 42;Jn. 8, 51; Ev. de Thom. log. 19), ailleurs il a été fâte comme thaumaturge et l'on collectionnait les histoires de ses actions puissantes (strate littéraire dont le sommaire est représenté par Jean 20, 30s) et enfin il y avait une christologie qui exprimait l'importance de Jésus principalement par les paroles concernant sa resurrection;ses images et termes ont été pris de l'apocalyptique juive. Des sentences courtes originelles concernant la résurrection (p. ex. Rm. 10, 9) on a vu naître dans le milieu nonjuif des formules dans lesquelles la résurrection est expliquée comme une élévation lors de laquelle Jésus assume la fonction du Fils de Dieu (Rm. 1, 3s; 2 Tm. 2, 8). Un autre développement du message fondamental ont été des for- mules de la foi telles que 1 Co. 15, 3b–5.

Although water rituals were common in other religions of antiquity, water baptism took on a distinctive prominence in early Christianity as the sole or primary entry rite into the faith. According to Ephesians 4:5, “one baptism” is one of the marks of the unity of the church. Yet, ironically, it has come to symbolize the disunity of the church throughout history, owing to disagreements at several points: meaning (sacrament or symbol), mode (submersion, immersion, pouring, and/or sprinkling), and recipients (whether or not to include infants and very young children). The fact that the practice of water baptism has become a source not just of disagreement but also of division is attributable to the fact that in the church water baptism came to overshadow the reality that it only symbolized and partly mediated; namely, being “baptized in the Holy Spirit.” (As proof of this observation, most readers will expect this entry to be almost entirely about a water ritual.) Although consciousness of being “baptized in the Holy Spirit” made a resurgence in the modern era through the Charismatic and Pentecostal movements, it has been weakened by two misunderstandings: that baptism in the Spirit is an experience distinct from true conversion and that it requires as its almost exclusive manifestation speaking in tongues.

Matthew's Jesus is typically described as the humble, compassionate messiah. This 2002 book argues that this is, however, only half the story. Matthew's theologically rich quotation of Isaiah 42.1–4, traditionally considered one of the four servant songs, underscores that manifest in Jesus' powerful message and deeds, particularly his healings and inclusion of the marginalized, is the justice that was thought to accompany the arrival of the kingdom of God. The study explores modifications to the text-form of the Isaianic citations, their relationship to the surrounding context, and the rhetorical force of the final form. It argues that the quotations are bi-referential, functioning on both a narrative and theological level, and also explores the issues surrounding the troublesome 'extraneous' content. It arrives at the conclusion that this citation was central to Matthew's understanding of Jesus' life and mission. All totalled, this study offers a refreshing exploration of Matthew's high, ethical Christology.
