Intimate Partner Violence Among Married Male U.S. Army Soldiers: Ethnicity as a Factor in Self-Reported Perpetration and Victimization

Abstract: Correlates of self-reported intimate partner violence (IPV) were examined among 488 married male U.S. Army soldiers. Study results were examined within the framework of Johnson's (1995) typology, which proposes that there are two main types of IPV, common couple violence and intimate terrorism. We predicted that poor marital adjustment would be associated with minor violence, hypothesized to be indicative of common couple violence. We also predicted that psychological and behavioral characteristics associated … Show more

“…All studies were conducted in high-income countries, with two conducted in Canada [ 44 , 45 ], and the other 11 conducted in the USA. Five of the 13 studies were conducted in clinical settings [ 52 , 81 84 ] and eight in non-clinical settings [ 44 , 45 , 47 , 48 , 50 , 54 , 58 , 85 ]. Five of the 13 studies were categorised as high quality (i.e., scoring 50% or higher for selection bias) [ 44 , 45 , 47 , 48 , 50 ].…”

“…Six of the 13 studies utilised validated measures of IPV such as the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) or the Abuse Assessment Screen to measure domestic violence. Four studies used adapted versions of validated tools [ 54 , 58 , 81 , 83 ]. The remaining three studies measured IPV using an objective question [ 47 , 48 , 52 ] (see Table 3 ).…”

“…Alcohol use has been noted in both civilian and military research literatures as an important risk factor for IPA perpetration (Fonseca et al, 2006;Hurlbert & Whittaker, 1991;Jensen, Lewis, & Xenakis, 1986;Langhinrichsen-Rohling, 2005;Stith & McMonigle, 2009). It also has been associated with the severity of IPA, including the likelihood of injury and even homicide (McCarroll, Fan, & Bell, 2009;Pan et al, 1994;Rosen, Parmley, Knudson, & Fancher, 2002;Stith & McMonigle, 2009). In a different sample of Navy recruits, alcohol problems were related to premilitary IPA perpetration for both men and women (Merrill, Crouch, Thomsen, & Guimond, 2004;Merrill, Hervig, & Milner, 1996;White, Merrill, & Koss, 2001).…”

“…All four studies of physical IPV victimisation among males involved active duty participants, with two being classed as high quality (Belik et al, 2009;Foran et al, 2011). Past-year prevalence rates for any physical IPV ranged from 19.61% to 38% (Foran et al, 2011;Rosen et al, 2002a;Rosen et al, 2002b). Prevalence rates for moderate-severe past-year IPV ranged from 10% to 16% (Rosen et al, 2002a;Rosen et al, 2002b).…”
