Intestinal tuberculosis: Findings on double-contrast barium enema

Abstract: Seven cases of intestinal tuberculosis in an active stage were studied by the double-contrast barium enema (DCBE) method. Formerly, diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis in the early stage by single-contrast barium enema (SCBE) and barium meals was based on functional phenomena, such as spasm and hypermotility of the ileocecal region. Presently, this can be better accomplished by DCBE. DCBE enables the detection of shallow ulcers with their characteristic elevated margins. These ulcers are frequently slim and t… Show more

“…Tuberculous enteritis is common at ileocaecal region in a study conducted by Atm Prakash34 and also study done by Reto Valiente L, et al followed by ileum as the next common site. 11 In present study all subjects had involvement of caecum associated involvement of ileum in some cases and the non specific symptoms i.e. fever, pain and tender abdomen, loss of weight and appetite was also observed.…”

“…A gaping ileocecal valve with narrowing of the terminal ileum (Fleischner sign) or a narrowed terminal ileum with rapid emptying of the involved segment through a gaping ileocecal valve into a shortened, rigid, obliterated cecum (Stierlin sign) raise the suspicion of ileocecal TB. Shallow mucosal ulceration with elevated margins may also be seen if a double contrast examination is performed (Thoeni and Margulis 1979; Nakano et al 1992). Retraction of the mesocolon eventually results in a "pulled-up cecum."…”

“…Various techniques have been evaluated for the diagnosis of abdominal TB which include laparoscopic biopsies for peritoneal TB, 7,8 colonoscopy for the diagnosis of illeocecal and colonic TB, 9,10 double contrast barium enema 11 and ultrasonography 12 . ELISA using mycobacterial saline extracted antigen 13 and detection of anticord factor antibodies 14 are the diagnostic tests based on serology which also have been evaluated for the diagnosis of abdominal TB.…”
