Intestinal epithelium of juvenile douradoSalminus brasiliensis(Cuvier, 1816) fed diet with lyophilized bovine colostrum

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of lyophilized bovine colostrum (LBC) used as partial source of dietary protein on the histological characteristics of the intestinal epithelium of juvenile dourado Salminus brasiliensis. Juveniles were fed diets containing 0%, 10% or 20% of LBC inclusion for either 30 or 60 days. For the histological study, the intestine was divided into three segments, S1, S2 and posterior intestine. In the S1 segment, interaction between treatment and period was observed in t… Show more

“…Sampled excisions were processed using standard histological techniques (Cruz et al, 2014;Moretti et al, 2014); six blade-mounted sections per fish were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H.E.). The morphometric analysis of proximal intestine comprised: measurement of mucosal fold height (FH), fold thickness (FT), and muscular layer thickness (MT).…”

“…Mucins secreated by goblet cells are either acidic, neutral or mixed in nature. In fish GC having acidic mucins protect intestinal epithelium against chemical agents while GC having neutral mucins provide protection against chemical agents (Cruz et al, 2014). Factors that lead to an increase in GC having acidic and neutral mucin under the influence of AFB1 or YTB supplementation are yet to be investigated.…”

“…Colostrum is a rich source of protein like immunoglobulins, essential nutrients, hormones and biologically active molecules and is widely used in mammals as a source of nutrition and immune protection to newborn (Blum & Baumrucker ; Hurley & Theil ; Moretti, Nordi, Lima, Pauletti, Susin & Machado‐Neto ; Lima, Moretti, Nordi, Pauletti, Susin & Machado‐Neto ; Moretti, Nordi, Lima, Pauletti & Machado‐Neto ). The consumption of bovine colostrum by fish provided intestinal morphometrical alteration, as a consequence of increased activity of absorption processes (Rodrigues, Pauletti, Kindlein, Delgado, Cyrino & Machado‐Neto ), changes in pattern of goblet cells present in enteric mucosae (Cruz, Moretti, Nordi, Cyrino & Machado‐Neto ), the indicators of cellular activity in muscle, liver and intestine tissue (Pauletti, Kindlein, Bagaldo, Rodrigues, Delgado, Cyrino & Machado‐Neto ,b) and was found too absence of implications in intestinal enzymatic activity (Moretti, Nordi, Cruz, Cyrino & Machado‐Neto ).…”
