We evaluated the correlation between oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and the Helkimo clinical dysfunction index (HDI) in patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA). Clinical data and scores for the Chinese version of the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-C14) were recorded and analyzed for 541 patients with TMJ OA. Each patient was assigned an HDI score of 1 to 25, which was used to classify severity into three categories. OHRQoL was assessed by using OHIP-C14 score, which ranged from 0 to 56. Both HDI score and severity were significantly correlated with total OHIP-C14 score (P < 0.001 for both comparisons). The scores for all HDI domains except function impairment (P = 0.205) were significantly correlated with OHIP-C14 score. The scores for all seven OHIP-C14 domains were significantly correlated with HDI score and severity. Several correlations between OHIP-C14 domains and HDI domain scores were significant. HDI score and severity were correlated with OHIP-C14 score in TMJ OA patients. As compared with function-related domains, pain-related HDI domains were more strongly inversely related to OHRQoL. Objective: Pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) related temporomandibular joint disorder remains unclear. Some studies investigated the change of condyle after Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) injection which is similar to osteoarthritis. However, there were few studies to demonstrate effect of TMJ in CIA which mimics RA. The aim of this study was to investigate the TM-joint response of CFA and CIA group in rat model. Methods:24 Rats were divided into 4 groups. (1) Control group. (2) 50μl type I collagen injection group. (3) 50μl CFA injection group. (4) 25μl type I collagen + 25μl CFA injection group. Drug injection was performed on day 0 and day 14 and sacrificed on day 7, and day 35. After sacrificed, TMJ tissue was collected to do the H&E stain and investigated the inflammatory (IL-1β and MMP3) gene expression.Results: TMJ tissue of CFA group demonstrated adaptive bone growth. On the other hand, the subchondral bone of CIA group appeared degenerative process. The trend of IL-1β and MMP3 gene increased in CFA and CIA group compared to control group in synovial tissue and disc (p<0.05). Conclusion:Within limitation of this study, it's concluded that the CIA method can be used in RA related TMD mechanism research.

In the development of OA play the role of different risk factors. Lack of pathognomonic of clinical symptoms of OA temporomandibular joint (TMJ), staging over to the gradual change in the severity of radiographic changes make it difficult to diagnose. Radiation methods of TMJ play an important role in the differential diagnosis of OA. In the treatment of OA TMJ should take into account the clinical form, the presence of complications, concomitant diseases of the patient.
