Interventional Effects of Weight-Loss Policy in a Healthy City among Participants with Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: This study aimed to establish a friendly environment of active living and healthy eating for citizens while promoting and increasing knowledge of healthy exercise. Acquisition of physical activity skills and citizens’ lifestyle changes result in reduction in rates of obesity and deaths related to underlying metabolism syndrome. This study used a non-experimental cross-sectional design to survey residents living in Taiwan’s rural Miaoli County. The inclusion criterion was positive screening for metabolic syndro… Show more

“…The uHealth nutrition education initiative is an online self-monitoring program, and data are collected during each session, and are then analyzed cumulatively [ 21 ]. A previous cross-sectional study in rural Taiwan successfully reduced the mortality rate from MetS by applying an appropriate Health City plan [ 23 ]. The Health City plan for Miaoli County, Taiwan integrated public and civil departments, nongovernmental organizations, and community resources to develop a model of “must move” and “healthy diet” as part of a sustainable development strategy.…”

“…The Health City plan for Miaoli County, Taiwan integrated public and civil departments, nongovernmental organizations, and community resources to develop a model of “must move” and “healthy diet” as part of a sustainable development strategy. Thus, an appropriate health promotion project may effectively reduce the threat of death by MetS [ 23 ]. However, most previous studies on MetS and its interventions focused on adults aged >30 years; consequently, more studies about young adults are needed.…”

“…Although this meta-analysis confirmed the homogeneity of the study, technology-mediated interventions were found to be effective in reducing waist circumference, fasting blood sugar, and body mass index, with statistically significant results. Abdominal obesity increases the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver [ 16 , 29 , 40 , 49 ]. Abdominal obesity is known to have a greater risk of MetS due to not only simple abdominal obesity, but also other clinical features of MetS such as blood pressure, high triglycerides, hypoglycemic lipoprotein cholesterol, and blood sugar [ 7 , 36 , 68 ].…”

“…In addressing these issues, several studies have used technology-mediated interventions to promote health in participants at risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) [ 16 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ]. According to a literature review related to the prevention and management of MetS, about a third of the studies were only targeting the middle-aged population, and over 60% were concerned about people already living with MetS.…”
