Used vehicle tires are a source of mosquito vectors and a means of their introduction and expansion. With the aim of assessing the effects of urbanisation on the main mosquito vectors in temperate Argentina, the infestation levels of Aedes aegypti (L.) and Culex pipiens L. were studied in used tires from highly urbanised cities to low-urbanised small towns in Buenos Aires. Immatures of both species accounted for 96% of the 9,722 individuals collected; the total individuals collected represented seven species. The percentage of water-filled tires containing mosquitoes [container index (CI)] was 33% and the percentage of infested sites [site index (SI)] was 65.2%. These indexes decreased significantly from low to high urbanisation levels for both mosquito species. The relative abundance (RA) of Ae. aegypti immatures was slightly higher toward large cities, but showed no difference for Cx. pipiens. The CI of shaded tires was significantly higher than the CI of exposed tires for both mosquito species. There was no difference in RA values between shaded and sunlit tires. The CI and the SI were highest during the summer across the urbanisation levels, except for Cx. pipiens, which continued to increase during the autumn in small towns. Results related to urbanisation gradient, sunlit exposure and seasonality are discussed

La reciente expansión geográfica del mosquito Aedes albopictus ha estado acompañada en algunos sitios por la disminución en la abundancia o por la eliminación local de Aedes aegypti, pero las dos especies aún coexisten en extensas regiones de América. En este trabajo se ofrece un resumen de los posibles mecanismos responsables de sus patrones de abundancia y desplazamiento, así como de su significado en cuanto a la transmisión de enfermedades. Entre los mecanismos observados, se encuentran la competencia por recursos, las diferencias en la capacidad para soportar la inanición, la competencia aparente a través de efectos diferenciales del parásito Ascogregarina taiwanensis, y la inhibición causada por larvas de Ae. albopictus en el desarrollo de los huevos de Ae. aegypti. Un mecanismo propuesto como promotor de la coexistencia de estas especies es la segregación en diferentes hábitats, lo que evita la competencia directa. Aedes aegypti predomina en áreas urbanas, Ae. albopictus en áreas rurales, y las dos especies coexisten en áreas periurbanas. Existen pruebas de que la distribución de Ae. aegypti y Ae. albopictus también puede verse afectada en ciertas áreas, por la distancia desde la costa. Otra posible causa de la rápida desaparición de Ae. aegypti es la interferencia reproductiva entre las dos especies. De acuerdo con esta hipótesis, los efectos asimétricos de los apareamientos entre especies favorecen a Ae. albopictus. Este tipo de interferencia reproductiva podría ser la causante de la eliminación de poblaciones simpátricas de las especies involucradas y de la rapidez con que Ae. aegypti ha desaparecido de muchos lugares en América luego de la invasión de Ae. albopictus. ABSTRACT. Competitive interactions between coexistingAedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus have been implied as a crucial factor shaping life history traits and population characteristics. The overlap in resource requirements and similarities in the life history strategies of the two Aedes mosquitoes form a basis for competitive interactions. In the present study, the role of the food quality of the larval habitats in influencing the outcome of competition between Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus is evaluated to highlight food quality as a basis for asymmetric competitive outcomes. Instar I larvae of the two mosquitoes were reared using conspecifics or heterospecifics of constant size and equal ratio with four different food types: boiled rice, boiled pulses, a mixture of boiled rice and pulses, and fish food. Competitive interactions were evaluated using age at pupation (AP), pupal weight (PW), dry adult weight (AW) and wing length (WL) with respect to intra-and interspecific competition for the two sexes of each mosquito species. The results show that Ae. albopictus developed faster but achieved a smaller size compared to Ae. aegypti under interspecific competition conditions, the extent of the difference varying significantly with the food type. Given the variety of food resources available in the small container larval habitats, the results of the study imply that food quality may act differentially with respect to larval development and adult body size, depending on the conspecifics or heterospecifics and on the sex of the species concerned. The dominance of one species over the other may also be a consequence of the resource utilization pattern that varies in the larval habitats.
