Patterns of reproductive isolation between species may provide insight into the mechanisms and evolution of barriers to interspeci¢c gene exchange. We used data from published interspeci¢c hybridization experiments from 14 genera of angiosperms in order to test for the presence of asymmetrical barriers to gene exchange. Reproductive isolation was examined at three life-history stages: the ability of interspeci¢c crosses to produce seeds, the viability of F 1 hybrids, and the fertility of F 1 hybrids. Statistically signi¢cant asymmetries in the strength of reproductive isolation between species were detected in all genera and at each of the three life-history stages. Asymmetries in seed production may be caused by a variety of mechanisms including di¡erences in stigma/style lengths, self compatibility and di¡erential fruit abortion. Asymmetries in post-zygotic isolation are probably caused by nuclear^cytoplasmic interactions. Asymmetrical reproductive isolation between plant taxa may have important implications for the dynamics of hybrid zones, the direction of genetic introgression and the probability of reinforcement.

Backyard gardens, dump heaps, and kitchen middens are thought to have provided important venues for early crop domestication via generation of hybrids between otherwise isolated plant species. However, this process has rarely been demonstrated empirically. For the majority of polyploid crops, it remains uncertain to what extent hybridization and polyploidization preceded domestication or were precipitated by human activities. Using archaeological, ethnobotanical, geographical, and genetic data, we investigate the extent and significance of predomestication cultivation, backyard sympatry, and spontaneous hybridization for the Mimosoid legume tree Leucaena, which is used as a food crop throughout south-central Mexico. We show that predomestication cultivation was widespread, involved numerous independent transitions from the wild to cultivation, and resulted in extensive artificial sympatry of 2-6 species locally and 13 species in total. Using chloroplast and rapidly evolving nuclear-encoded DNA sequences, we demonstrate that hybridization in Leucaena has been extensive and complex, spawning a diverse set of novel hybrids as a result of juxtaposition of species in cultivation. The scale and complexity of hybridization in Leucaena is significantly greater than that documented for any other Mexican plant domesticates so far. However, there are striking parallels between Leucaena and the other major Mexican perennial domesticates Agave and Opuntia, which show very similar domestication via backyard hybridization pathways. Our results suggest that backyard hybridization has played a central role in Mesoamerican crop domestication and demonstrate that the simple step of bringing species together in cultivation can provide a potent trigger for domestication.domestication ͉ Leguminosae ͉ Leucaena ͉ Mesoamerica

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a variabilidade de algumas características morfológicas em híbridos de Leucaena leucocephala e L. diversifolia (Leguminosae). Foram estabelecidos 20 genótipos, com 30 indivíduos cada, dispostos em seis blocos casualizados. As características morfológicas analisadas foram: comprimento de folha, número de pares de folíolos e foliólulos, núme-ro de nectários extraflorais; comprimento e largura de legumes e número de sementes por legume. O menor e o maior comprimento médio de folha foram, respectivamente, 8,6 cm e 30,6 cm. A população apresentou variação de 10,7 a 53,4 pares de foliólulos por folíolo. Em número de pares de folíolos por folha o menor valor médio foi 5,6 e o maior foi 20,3. A média de um nectário extrafloral por folha foi identificada na maioria dos indivíduos. O maior valor médio de número de sementes por legume foi 24,1 e o menor 5,0. Twenty genotypes, with 30 individuals each, of hybrids between L. leucocephala and L. diversifolia were established in a randomized blocks design with six repetitions. Leaf length, number of pinnae and leaflet pairs, number of extrafloral nectaries, legume length and width and number of seeds per legume were analyzed. Leaf length average values ranged from 8.6 cm to 30.6 cm. Number of leaflets per pinna ranged from 10.7 to 53.4 and the number of pinnae per leaf ranged from 5.6 to 20.3. Most of the individuals presented an average of 1.0 extrafloral nectary per leaf. The highest average value of number of seeds per legume was 24.1 and the lowest 5.0. Five genotypes were the most uniform considering the characteristics analyzed.
