Intersectionality in Transnational Education Policy Research

Abstract: This review assesses intersectionality as a theoretical and methodological approach to transnational education policy research. In particular, we are concerned with how the concept is translated and interpreted to interrogate globally circulating education policies and how that transformation might inform the concept within Western and Northern contexts. We acknowledge intersectionality's origins in U.S. Black feminist scholarship, but anticipate transformations as it travels to "Other" contexts and is transla… Show more

“…In other words, it is essential to examine the convergence between race, dis/ability, and other identity categories within IDEA in order to move beyond a one-size-fits all approach, and more adequately understand students' multidimensional and intersectional lives. Although a growing number of policy scholars around the globe are studying how equity-oriented policies address intersectionality (see Robert, & Yu, 2018), there has been a dearth of empirical research conducted on intersectionality and equity-oriented education policies in the US. Thus, examining how multiple identity categories are taken-up in equity-oriented policies and exploring how these policies are translated in local contexts is an important yet overlooked piece of the policy puzzle in education research.…”

“…The power of raciolinguistic ideologies in the lives of linguistically and racially minoritized individuals has been documented in research and practice (Ascenzi-Moreno & Seltzer,2021; Flores & Lewis, 2022; Smith, 2022). To avoid this erasure, I include intersectional theoretical principles (Harris & Leonardo, 2018; Robert & Yu, 2018) in my theorization of anti-adultism. Therefore, this study uses an intersectional anti-adultism conceptual lens to recognize that the institutionalized biases that limit youth from fully exercising agency are impacted by more than age, and to reject the resulting practices that diminish the capabilities of youth.…”

“…To work toward more just and equitable education work and institutions, intersectional gender, in particular, needs to be in focus. The intertwined inequality is as individualized as it is patterned and it is as localized as it is globally manifest (Robert & Yu, 2018). How has the transition to a so-called new way to educate shaped intersecting dynamics of oppression?…”
