Intersecting Imaginaries

Abstract: Sociotechnical imaginaries are futures that people envision might be possible and desirable. They have a real impact on how systems are designed and what values they have embedded in their design. This article examines imaginaries about autonomous systems, decentralized systems, and decentralized autonomous systems. Through a discussion of the literature on autonomous and decentralized systems and how these imaginaries play out in the blockchain community based on my qualitative research, I demonstrate how dec… Show more

“…Lustig et al [37] studied the sociotechnical imaginaries about how people envision the possible and desirable future of decentralized autonomous systems and identified three framings of autonomous technology as physical objects, as mathematical rules and as artificial managers, which can inform the design and governance of this novel concept. Faqir et al [17], from a more specific and practical perspective, review the collective governance DAO providing platforms and their key features.…”

“…5 Caitlyn Lustig disputes this claim, arguing that web3 is less a new dawn than a "proximal future" that is always promised but never arrives. This situation is also characteristic of pyramid schemes, which require buy-in from new users to fund payouts for early adopters (Lustig 2019). The author explore unconventional forms of social memory in my book with Richard Rinehart Re-collection (Rinehart and Ippolito 2014).…”
