Interprofessional Pharmacokinetics Simulation: Pharmacy and Nursing Students’ Perceptions

Abstract: Interprofessional practice between pharmacists and nurses can involve pharmacokinetic dosing of medications in a hospital setting. This study describes student perceptions of an interprofessional collaboration pharmacokinetics simulation on the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) 2016 Core Competencies. The investigators developed a simulation activity for senior undergraduate nursing and second-year pharmacy students. Nursing and pharmacy students (n = 54, 91 respectively) participated in the sim… Show more

“…Current literature outlines the success of simulation experiences for various clinical pharmacy activities including medication reconciliation, patient counseling, and pharmacokinetic dosing. [30][31][32] To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe and evaluate PAAST education and simulation training in the PharmD curricula. It is unknown if and to what…”

“…In contrast, online IPE experiences can be offered to a large number of students, and can be delivered with synchronous and/or asynchronous components. IPE activities have also been successfully implemented in online formats, including case studies, journal clubs, and simulation experiences that promote learner collaboration, self-reflection, and critical thinking (Anderson et al, 2019;Cropp et al, 2018;Friedman et al, 2019). Like in-person offerings, online IPE experiences also are generally evaluated positively by learners while producing the expected results in learning outcomes (Heuberger & Clark, 2019;Singer et al, 2018;White et al, 2019).…”

“…Herewith, a great opportunity opens for enhancement of the Pharmacy Game outcomes by further expansion into interprofessional education. Simulation of true multidisciplinary collaboration has the potential to provide authentic student experiences that they can carry into their future practice [ 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 ].…”
