Interpretive Research Aiming at Theory Building: Adopting and Adapting the Case Study Design

Abstract: Although the advantages of case study design are widely recognised, its original positivist underlying assumptions may mislead interpretive researchers aiming at theory building. The paper discusses the limitations of the case study design for theory building and explains how grounded theory systemic process adds to the case study design. The author reflects upon his experience in conducting research on the articulation of both traditional social networks and new virtual networks in six rural communities in Pe… Show more

“…Building on initial email correspondence which sought to gather salient information (Andrade 2009) about respondents' early experiences of lockdown, further depth of data (Chamberlain et al 2011) was built by asking the interviewees to explain what stood out as interesting and surprising in relation to how remote teaching worked or did not work during the first lockdown. “…The case study design was also employed to allow the researchers (authors of this chapter) to become an active participant with the learners, but still upholding expected research ethics (Andrade, 2009). The findings thereof were not generalisable as the inquiry was bound and therefore, thorough and contributing knowledge pertaining to the social context had to be developed (Brown, 2008).…”

“…Within IS, the role of theory is to enhance our understanding of the world by providing explanations, descriptions, predictions and actionable guidance [19]. Gregor's work is foundational for most recent discussions about theory in IS [42][43][44][45][46] and she proposed a classification schema or taxonomy of IS theories based on core characteristics and the primary goal of the theory [19]. The primary goal of a theory is directly related to a question or a problem that needs to be investigated, and theories are, therefore, developed for the purposes of analysis and description, prediction, explanation and prescription.…”
