“…The commentary tradition is of central importance to both our understanding of Dante's Commedia and medieval interpretative reading practices. As Dante had already applied the process of commentary to his own works Convivio and Vita Nuova in a form of self-exegesis (Botterill, 2005), it was a natural progression for his readers to do the same with the Commedia, a poem which Deborah Parker (1997) notes was relatively inaccessible even to a contemporary audience because of its range of ancient and theological references. This interpretative practice resulted in a huge canon of work in the century following Dante's death.…”
