Summary
Professionalization and school change and developmentThis paper argues that school development processes have the potential to encourage developments in professional teaching practice. Out of the necessity for change and development emerges a disposition for co-operative solutions to unpredictable problems and crises within the changing school. On the basis of a series of hermeneutic reconstructions of cases studies on school change and development, the authors describe the challenges which emerge for teachers within these processes. The challenges require the teachers to learn to deal with insecurity and unpredictability. This often has interesting consequences: (1) More of a teacher's individual work occurs within the framework of groupwork and cooperation. This strengthens communication above and beyond the confinements of lessons and learning processes.(2) A widening diversity of goal-and contentrelated processes and forms of teaching and learning. (3) Pupils' feedback concerning their own learning and their lessons is integrated better into school development processes. Out of this, emerge new diagnostic competencies relating to levels of learning, learning forms and learning paths. This results in a more diverse development of functional domains in teachers' activity.
