Interpretation of Doppler signals

Abstract: Combining color and spectral data, Doppler signal provides physiologic information about arterial and venous hemodynamics and anatomic information about vessel walls and diameter. Adequate sampling of Doppler signal is required to avoid pitfalls in interpreting spectral changes or color images. The level of information contained in spectral waveforms is high, compared with color display in terms of velocity profile alterations, as in stenoses, and cyclic changes of systolo-diastolic velocities. Therefore, inte… Show more

“…Aortic and renal artery measurements were performed using a 3.5-MHz convex probe, while a 7.5-MHz linear probe was used in carotid artery measurements. Basal values of peak systolic flow velocity (V max ), end diastolic flow velocity (V min ), resistivity index (RI = V max -V min /V max ), and pulsatility index (PI = V max -V min / V mean ) [10] of the bilateral carotid and renal artery were determined by an experienced radiologist in awake dogs. Renal artery values were obtained from the main renal arteries and one segmental artery from each kidney.…”

“…Combining color and spectral data, the Doppler signal provides physiologic information about arterial and venous hemodynamics and anatomic information about vessel walls and diameter. 2 It also allows noninvasive examination of blood flow velocities of the ophthalmic artery (OA) and its branches in the orbit. 3 In this study we evaluated the effect of antihypertensive therapy in patients with newly diagnosed essential hypertension with the use of the Doppler parameters of the central retinal artery (CRA), posterior ciliary artery (PCA), and OA.…”

“…RI and PI are popular parameters for characterizing the arterial waveform on Doppler sonography. 9 In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that RI is related to vascular resistance.…”
