Interpersonal context and desired emotional closeness in neural response to negative visual stimuli: Preliminary findings

Abstract: Introduction: Emotions typically emerge in interpersonal contexts, but the neural circuitry involved remains insufficiently understood. Two key features of interpersonal contexts are interpersonal interactions (e.g., supportive physical touch serving as a form of social regulation) and interpersonal traits. Social regulation research has predominately focused on fear by using physical threat (i.e., electric shock) as the stimulus. Given that social regulation helps with various negative emotions in the real wo… Show more

“…Because it is hard to dispute that an embrace from a loved one or the caresses of a romantic partner can be perceived as rewarding, this raises the question of the ecological validity of social touch paradigms, particularly in fMRI studies. While it is challenging to implement paradigms that model social rewards more accurately, previous studies examined social touch in close friends or romantic couples to increase ecological validity (Flores, Alarcón, Eckstrand, Lindenmuth, & Forbes, 2022;Kreuder et al, 2017;Nummenmaa et al, 2016). High experimental standardization can be retained using cover stories (Kreuder et al, 2017).…”

“…The interpersonal skills addressed in IPT-A include conflict negotiation, interpersonal problem solving, social approach/avoidance, response inhibition, and perspective-taking [ 23 ]. Successful early intervention through IPT-A may, in some ways, be related to the functioning of the SEN, as this network is strongly implicated in interpersonal relationships [ 28 ].…”
