Interpenetrating polymer networks based on castor oil, XVIII

Abstract: SynopsisCastor oil-a renewable resource-is abundantly grown in tropical countries. It is a triglyceride of glycerol and ricinoleic acid containing hydroxyl functionality. These hydroxyls were reacted with 4,4'-diphenyl methane diisocyanate to form prepolyurethanes with different NCO/OH ratios. The prepolyurethane was swollen in ethyl methacrylate monomer containing 1% ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as crosslinker by radical polymerization initiated with benzoyl peroxide. The polyurethane/poly (ethyl methacrylat… Show more

“…crease in the plastic (PS) component, whereas percent of elongation decreased. 19 The values of These are in the expected ranges. while PU (castor oil / MDI) has transmittance around 43%, depending on the levels of NCO/OH g/mL, 80 to 88 Shore A, and 0.0118-0.0187, respectively (Table II).…”

“…These continue to attract attention, especially in those countries where castor oil is grown commercially. In India, Suthar and coworkers have long been active [36,37], synthesizing a host of castor oil-urethane network-based IPN compositions with various acrylics. Among the more recent studies are those of Nayak et al [3840].…”

“…Researcher has proposed modification on active sites of castor oil to utilize double bond of unsaturated fatty acid and carboxyl group yields new modified or activated polyols, which can be utilized for polyurethane adhesive formulation. Castor oil based polyurethanes are extensively used in coatings, IPNs, telecommunications, as insulators in electrical industries, foams and adhesives [26][27][28][29][30] . The adhesive properties of polyurethane from modified castor oil or its derivatives are studied under the different variation in composition [31][32][33] .…”
