“…Together, these results suggest that an inability to take advantage of bodily feedback might be a contributing factor for maintenance of drinking behaviour (Ateş Çöl et al, 2016;Schmidt et al, 2013;Sönmez et al, 2017) and that this effect might be further exacerbated by alcohol ingestion (Abrams et al, 2018). The role of impulsivity and its facets in the relationship between emotional processing, interoception and alcohol use, although partly supported via the arousal hypothesis of impulsivity (Zuckerman 1969), requires further investigation.…”

“…Schmidt, Eulenbruch, Langer and Banger (2013) found that the craving of alcohol dependent patients was associated with greater tension reduction expectancies, but only when they had poor interoceptive awareness (indexed by heart rate estimation). The authors argued that cognitive triggers (here, alcohol expectancies) become more important when somatic perception is less acute, and that mindfulness training may address this problem.…”

“…This argument is supported by research showing that interoception is associated with adaptive self‐regulation in general and emotion regulation in particular (Füstös, Gramann, Herbert, & Pollatos, ; Van ‘t Wout, Faught, & Menino, ). For instance, interoceptive awareness has been shown to be negatively related to obsessive compulsive drinking behaviour (Schmidt, Eulenbruch, Langer, & Banger, ) and positively with the ability to respond adaptively to unfair treatment by others (Van ‘t Wout et al ., ).…”
