Interobserver agreement for the assessment of handicap in stroke patients.

Abstract: Interobserver agreement for the assessment of handicap in stroke patients was investigated in a group of 10 senior neurologists and 24 residents from two centers. One hundred patients were separately interviewed by two physicians in different combinations. The degree of handicap was recorded by each observer on the modified Ran kin scale, which has six grades (0-5). The agreement rates were corrected for chance (K statistics). Both physicians agreed on the degree of handicap in 65 patients; they differed by on… Show more

“…Next, we assessed the clinical outcome using a modified Rankin scale (mRS) score at 6 months (± 1 week) after the onset of the acute stroke (van Swieten, Koudstaal, Visser, Schouten, & van Gijn, 1988). We further divided patients with PPD into two groups with follow‐up mRS (FmRS) scores of >2 and ≤2.…”

“…Two different dependent variables were used in the study; mRS12 6 months after stroke and change in mRS from baseline to 6 months. mRS evaluates the patient's functional competency in seven levels (0–6) where scores from 0 to 2 signify independency, 3–5 varying degrees of dependency and 6 death of the patient.…”

“…The main results of this study have been published previously 11. The aim of the present study was to identify possible predictors for (1) the patients' functional level 6 months after stroke (evaluated by mRS12 at 6 months), and (2) the change in functional level from stable baseline (1 week post‐stroke, or at discharge if discharged earlier) to 6 months after stroke (evaluated by change in mRS).…”

“…The most commonly used primary outcome measure in acute stroke trials is the modified Rankin Scale (mRS),14, 15 at least partly because it is simple to administer, has good reproducibility, and avoids major floor or ceiling effects 16. Although most functional recovery poststroke happens in the first few months,17 recovery beyond 6 months does occur,18 but there are few published data on the relationship between early mRS and long‐term disability.…”
