The share of road vehicles in urban transport systems is a challenge for modern and dynamically developing urban areas in accordance with the concept of sustainable and Smart Cities. Increasingly, there is a need to promote and adapt urban space to the movement of vulnerable road users (VRU). As part of a clear emphasis on the issue of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, the aim of the article is to define the typology and hierarchy of solutions contributing to the increase in VRU safety in cities. The research process was based on the use of grounded theory. In the adopted research methodology, the use of the Delphi method made it possible to identify the approach of various European cities to the use and implementation of technical, technological and organizational solutions affecting safety. The research made it possible to evaluate individual solutions in VRU safety management and to indicate a list of recommendations for improving security, taking into account the views of international experts. In addition, the results of this study may enrich the current literature, helping to understand the perception of solutions implemented in urban transport systems as a holistic set of interrelated elements supporting pedestrian safety and increasing their role in cities.

Billions of devices are connected via the Internet which has produced various challenges and opportunities. The increase in the number of devices connected to the Internet of things (IoT) is nearly beyond imagination. These devices are communicating with each other and facilitating human life. The connection of these devices has provided opening directions for the smart applications which are one of the growing areas of research. Among these opportunities, security and privacy are considered to be one of the major issues for researchers to tackle. Proper security measures can prevent attackers from interrupting the security of IoT network inside the smart city for secure data traffic. Keeping in view the security consideration of data traffic for smart devices and IoT, the proposed study presented machine learning algorithms for securing the data traffic based on a firewall for smart devices and IoT network. The study has used the dataset of “Firewall” for validation purposes. The experimental results of the approach show that the hybrid deep learning model (based on convolution neural network and support vector machine) outperforms than decision1 rules and random forest by generating a recognition rate of 95.5% for the hybrid model, 68.5% for decision rules, and 78.3% accuracy for random forest. The validity of the proposed model is also tested based on other performance metrics such as f score, error rate, recall, and precision. This high accuracy rate and other performance values show the applicability of the proposed hybrid model to secure data traffic purposes in smart devices. This can be used in many research areas of the smart city for security purposes.

Load Balancing Metric Based Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (lbRPL)

IETF ROLL working Group standardized the IPv6 Routing protocol (RPL) for applications over low-power and lossy networks (LLNs). RPL constructs a Destination Oriented Direction Acyclic Graph (DODAG) to organize network topology. RPL shows fast network setup and good scalability. However, it may suffer from load imbalance due to diverse network traffic and heavy load on preferred or forwarding parents. To optimize the load balancing of routes in RPL, this paper proposes load balancing metric based routing protocol called lbRPL. We introduce a new routing metric for RPL called load balancing index (LBI), which exploits load balancing characteristics of RPL nodes to select more load balanced parents and routes. LBI includes ETX, Parent count (Pc) and Remaining Parent Energy (Pe) metrics to make routing decisions. Simulation results show that lbRPL improves network performance, stability and improved network life time to RPL.
