International foodborne outbreak ofShigella sonneiinfection in airline passengers

Abstract: During 22-24 August 2004, an outbreak of Shigella sonnei infection affected air travellers who departed from Hawaii. Forty-seven passengers with culture-confirmed shigellosis and 116 probable cases who travelled on 12 flights dispersed to Japan, Australia, 22 US states, and American Samoa. All flights were served by one caterer. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of all 29 S. sonnei isolates yielded patterns that matched within one band. Food histories and menu reviews identified raw carrot served onboard as the… Show more

“…Because of the low infectious dose and environmental persistence, S. sonnei can be spread by water (17)(18)(19)(20), food (21,22), and direct person-to-person transmission (23,24), which can trigger sporadic cases or family outbreaks and may cause more extensive secondary transmission from a common source (25,26). Therefore, S. sonnei outbreaks in childcare centers and schools can typically spread to the community or to other cities.…”

“…From data prior to 2007, lettuce was associated with shigellosis outbreaks in Europe (Frost et al, 1995;Kapperud et al, 1995). In the USA, outbreaks were associated with fresh parsley (CDC, 1999) and tomatoes (Reller et al, 2006), and raw carrots (Gaynor et al, 2009) and salad preparation (Dunn et al, 1995).…”

“…PFGE yöntemi agaroz içine gömülü haldeki bakteriden, yapısal bütünlüğü bozulmadan izole edilen kromozomun, restriksiyon enzimi (RE) ile kesim profilinin belirlenmesi esasına dayanır [18,19,20]. Yöntemde başlıca şu aşamalar bulunmaktadır: çalışılacak bakterilerin hazırlanması, bakterilerin agarozla karıştırılması, agaroz içindeki bakterilerin parçalanması (in situ lysis), agaroz içindeki kromozomun saflaştırılması, agaroz içindeki kromozomal DNA'nın RE ile kesilmesi (in situ-digestion), elektroforezle DNA parçalarının ayrıştırılması, DNA bantların görünür hale getirilmesi ve sonuçların yorumlanması [8,14,21].…”
