Internal structure of aeolian dunes in Abu Dhabi determined using ground‐penetrating radar

Abstract: A ground‐penetrating radar survey of aeolian dunes in the Al Liwa area of Abu Dhabi reveals a variety of dipping reflectors which are interpreted as primary sedimentary structures. The interpretation of the radar profiles has been confirmed by bulldozing trenches through the study area and comparing logged sections in the trenches with the radar profiles. NNW— SSE‐orientated radar profiles, approximately parallel to the prevailing wind direction, show two sets of dipping reflectors which are interpreted as set… Show more

“…The directions of maximum gradient in the two trend surfaces are parallel to the two main sand-moving wind directions, from the west or northwest and from the southeast (Bristow et al, 1996;Goudie et al, 2000c). However, as they are 180°to each other, both the observed trends could be explained by either one of these wind directions.…”

“…The climate is hot and humid; the hottest month is July (mean annual temperature at Ras Al Khaimah 27Ð4°C) and the most humid month is January (mean monthly humidity 70 per cent) (Böer, 1997). The wind regime is complex, with just under 52 per cent of sand-moving winds blowing from the west and northwest and just under 28 per cent blowing from the southeast (Bristow et al, 1996;Goudie et al, 2000c).…”

“…The availability of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method, since the nineties, provided a fast noninvasive tool to image in detail near surface sedimentary structures (e.g. Gawthorpe et al, 1993;Schenk et al, 1993;Harari, 1996;Bristow et al, 1996;Silva & Scherer, 2000;Neal & Roberts, 2000Van Dam, 2002;Oliveira Jr. et al, 2003;Pedersen & Clemmensen, 2005). Comprehensive reviews of the use of GPR in sedimentological studies were done by and Bristow & Jol (2003).…”

“…As a result, GPR has been extensively applied to the delineation of stratigraphy including mapping sedimentary facies and stratal geometry (Baker and Jol, 2007;Conyers and Goodman, 1997). For example, the characteristic steeply dipping parallel reflectors in aeolian sediments can be effectively imaged with GPR (Bristow et al, 1996).…”
