Intermittently Nonlinear Impulsive Noise Mitigation and Doppler Shift Compensation in UWA-OFDM Systems

Abstract: Impulsive noise (IN) and Doppler shift can significantly degrade the performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems. In this paper, we propose a receiver structure that deals efficiently with both these channel impairments in a coded OFDM-based UWA system. First, an analog nonlinear preprocessor (ANP) is proposed to efficiently detect and mitigate IN in an analog domain. The proposed ANP exhibits intermittent nonlinearity when there is imp… Show more

“…The improved time-frequency synchronization method proposed in this paper is based on the fact that the Doppler effect has been shifted from a "wideband" to a "narrowband" problem, or the signal has been compensated for the wideband Doppler effect by resampling, etc. [8,36,37,[44][45][46][47][48]. The received signal is then subjected to fine time offset estimation and residual carrier frequency offset compensation to obtain more accurate and robust joint time-frequency synchronization.…”

“…Impulsive noise is human made noise having non Gaussian characteristics, exhibiting adverse effects in communication systems such as great capacity loss and poor error rate performance [4,5]. In [6][7][8][9], authors are taking benefit of the processing in analog domain whereas IN is separable and broadband. But for analog domain technique, finding thresholds s is not trivial.…”

“…Fundamentally, the image is improved by removing noise when performing spatial operations in the local neighbourhood of the input pixels. Non-linear filters do not utilize a mask and operate directly on pixel values at neighbouring pixels (Barazideh et al, 2019;Mythili et al, 2020). Nonlinear filters are maximal, minimal and median filter.…”
