Interior spatial layout with soft objectives using evolutionary computation

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents the design problem of furniture arrangement in a residential interior living space, and addresses it by means of evolutionary computation. Interior arrangement is an important and interesting problem that occurs commonly when designing living spaces. It entails determining the locations of interior elements such as tables, seating elements, projection screens etc., in order to satisfy objectives. Despite it's commonality, it is a challenging problem that entails mainly soft objecti… Show more

“…The related literature on NSGA II addresses issues not limited to building placement on the land (Rahimbakhsh et al , 2022); building mass design (Gürsel Dino and Üçoluk, 2017); thermal comfort and energy consumption (Yu et al , 2015); heating, cooling and lighting (Lapisa et al , 2018); structure and energy performance (Brown and Mueller, 2016); life cycle; and carbon footprint optimization (Pal et al , 2017). NSGA II has also been used in a few studies in interior design and furniture design (Chatzikonstantinou and Bengisu, 2016; Sarkar and Bardhan, 2020). This study differs from previous studies in the literature in that it approaches earthquake risk as an optimization problem at the interior design level.…”

“…People must move between internal and external locations to accomplish this [25]. Designers frequently make choices that encourage social connections based on the sociability and well-being of the inhabitants [26,27]. Additionally, using indoor plants, fresh air, and natural sounds, biophallic design principles are applied to enhance the quality of indoor air.…”

“…Spatial design is a conceptual design approach that accounts for both the interior design and service design. This requires the flow of people between interior and exterior environments [29,30]. Design decisions are typically made by the designers to promote social interactions in accordance with the sociability and well-being of the occupants [28].…”
