Interferometric ground-roll removal: Attenuation of scattered surface waves in single-sensor data

Abstract: Land seismic data are contaminated by surface waves ͑or ground roll͒. These surface waves are a form of source-generated noise and can be strongly scattered by near-surface heterogeneities. The resulting scattered ground roll can be particularly difficult to separate from the desired reflection data, especially when this scattered ground roll propagates in the crossline direction. We have used seismic interferometry to estimate scattered surface waves, recorded during an exploration seismic survey, between pai… Show more

“…This link is only made possible by using the scattering form of source-receiver interferometry that we derive here. This may also allow new approaches for scattered ground-roll removal to be developed ͑e.g., see Halliday et al, 2010͒. The link between seismic interferometry and imaging has previously been discussed by Wapenaar ͑2007͒, Thorbecke and Wapenaar ͑2007͒, and Vasconcelos ͑2008͒. In Thorbecke and Wapenaar ͑2007͒, the connection between the work of Oristaglio and seismic interferometry is discussed, but the link could not be made explicit.…”

“…Crosscorrelation of refracted waves gives virtual refractions that can be used for improved estimation of the subsurface parameters ͑Dong et al , 2006b;Mikesell et al, 2009͒. Surface waves can be predicted by interferometry and subsequently subtracted from exploration seismic data ͑Curtis et Dong et al, 2006a;Halliday et al, 2007Halliday et al, , 2010Xue et al, 2009͒. In his recent book, Schuster ͑2009͒ systematically discusses all possible interferometric transformations between surface data, VSP data, single-well profiles, and crosswell data.…”
