-Among the weeds that cause interference with the growth and development of barley the turnip stands out, especially by the high competitive ability for the resources available in the environment. The research objective with the study was to evaluate the competitive ability of barley cultivars to live with a turnip biotype. Experiments were installed in a greenhouse, in the experimental outlining of randomized blocks designed with four repetitions. The treatments were arranged in replacement series, consisting of proportions of barley plants and turnip: 100: 0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0: 100% which was equivalent to 20: 0, 15: 5, 10:10, 5:15 and 0:20 plants per pot. The barley was represented by BRS Cauê, BRS Elis and MN 610 and the competitor by turnip. The competitive analysis was made through diagrams applied in replacement experiments, among with use of relative competitiveness indices. The leaf area (AF) and the dry mass of the aerial part (MS) were evaluated at 50 days after the emergence of the species. The results show that there was competition between barley varieties with the turnip with mutual damage to the species involved in the community. Turnip negatively modified the AF and the MS of BRS Cauê, MN 610 and BRS Elis demonstrating higher competitive ability for the means of the resources. The interspecific competition causes greater damage to the AF and the MS species than the intraspecific competition. Thus, the turnip control is recommended the turnip control even when present at low densities of plants infesting the barley. This study evaluated the relative competitive ability of rice cultivars in the presence of a joint-vetch (Aeschynomene denticulata) biotype, at different replacement levels of plants in the association. The experiments were conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replications. First, it was determined the population of plants in which the final dry mass remains constant, both for the rice and for the joint-vetch (24 plants per pot). Later, two experiments were carried out to evaluate the competitiveness of the rice cultivars BRS Querência and BRS Sinuelo CL with joint-vetch plants, both conducted in replacement series, in different crop and weed combinations, varying the relative proportions of plants per pot (24:0, 18:6, 12:12, 6:18 and 0:24). Competitiveness of each species was analyzed by diagrams applied to replacement experiments and by the relative competitiveness indices. Fifty days after the emergence, tillering or number of leaves, height, leaf area and shoot dry mass were determined. Competition occurred between the rice cultivars and the joint-vetch, both were adversely affected, irrespective of the plant proportion. This resulted in reductions in all evaluated variables. Different competitive abilities were observed between rice cultivars in the presence of joint-vetch. The 'BRS Querência' was more competitive than the 'BRS Sinuelo CL' for all plant proportions and variables tested.

RESUMOO manejo das plantas daninhas deve ser realizado de forma racional levando-se em consideração a habilidade competitiva das cultivares, as quais podem ser mais ou menos afetadas pelas espécies daninhas, podendo ser reduzidos o custo de controle e o uso de herbicidas. Neste trabalho avaliou-se a interferência de populações de Brachiaria brizantha em cultivares de canade-açúcar (RB72454, RB867515 e SP801816), com o objetivo de comparar variáveis e estimar a perda de produtividade de colmos da cultura, em decorrência da competição. Para isto foi conduzido um experimento em condições de campo, em que as cultivares conviveram com diferentes densidades populacionais da espécie daninha. Foram avaliadas as variáveis: população de plantas, massa da matéria seca da parte aérea, cobertura do solo e área foliar da B. brizantha. As perdas de produtividade de colmos em virtude da interferência da B. brizantha, podem ser estimadas satisfatoriamente pelo modelo da hipérbole retangular com melhor ajuste para a variável população de plantas da B. brizantha. A cultivar SP80-1816 apresentou maior e a RB867515 menor habilidade competitiva. In this study the interference of Brachiaria brizantha populations was evaluated in sugarcane cultivars (RB72454, RB867515 e SP801816) to compare variables and estimate the stalks yield loss as a result of weed competition. For this, an experiment was conducted under field conditions, where the cultivars coexisted with different weed densities. The variables evaluated were: plant population, dry weight of shoots, ground cover and leaf area of B. brizantha. The stalks yield losses due to the interference of B. brizantha, can be satisfactorily estimated by the hyperbolic model which adjusted better for the variable plant population of B. brizantha. The cultivar SP801816 showed higher and the RB867515 lowest competitive ability.
