Interfacial modification and impact properties of Nb/MoSi2 laminate composites by the addition of ZrO2, NbSi2, and SiC particles

Abstract: In this study, the results of a thermodynamical estimation indicate that the impact properties of Nb/ MoSi 2 laminate composites can be improved by suppressing the interfacial reaction. The effects of addition of SiC, NbSi 2 , and ZrO 2 on the impact properties and interfacial reaction of Nb/MoSi 2 laminate composites are also examined. Laminate composites, which comprise alternate layers of matrix mixture and Nb foil, were fabricated by the hot press process. Addition of ZrO 2 particle is clearly demonstrated… Show more

“…Several studies showed that the incorporation of high temperature refractory materials like Nb or Ta to MoSi 2 was very effective for the toughness strengthening of MoSi 2 intermetallics by the variation of their microstructures 5,6 . The lamination of MoSi 2 with Nb foil also improved the impact value of MoSi 2 intermetallics 7,8 . Moreover, in order to extend the application of MoSi 2 intermetallics to the high temperature components, it is essential to examine the thermal damage resistance at the various critical atmospheres.…”

“…Previous studies showed that the addition of ductile phases like Nb or Ta was very effective for improving the impact value and the fracture toughness of MoSi 2 material, compared to those of ceramic reinforcements. [3][4][5] On the other hand, the ceramic reinforcement provided a good strength property for MoSi 2 materials. [6] The damage behavior of MoSi 2 materials are recognized as an important factor for the design of high temperature components.…”
