Interfacial dilational rheology related to enhance oil recovery

Abstract: Dilational rheology has been proved to be a powerful tool to investigate equilibrium and dynamic properties of adsorption films by recent studies. Interfacial dilational properties play crucial roles in Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, such as the formation of oil bank and the demulsification of crude oil emulsions. Moreover, measurements of the interfacial rheology give important clues about the conformations and molecular interactions of amphiphiles adsorbed at an interface. In this review, the experim… Show more

“…Surface dilational rheology plays a key role in acquiring the information of molecule orientation, molecule interaction and characteristics of mixed surfactant/macromolecule films etc (Sun et al, 2011). Moreover, the data of dilational rheology has been proven to be related to the stabilities of foams and emulsions (Sun et al, 2011).…”

“…Polymer microgels have rapidly gained importance in the field of materials science owing to their potential applications in biomedical [1], pollution control [2] enhanced oil recovery [3], sensors [4], controlled release of encapsulated drugs in response to environmental changes [5], the fabrication of photonic crystals, glucose sensing [6] templatebased synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles [7] and chemical separation [8]. These numerous applications of microgels arise from their ability to undergo reversible volume phase transitions in response to external stimuli such as a change in pH [9], temperature [10] and ionic strength of the surrounding medium [11].…”

“…However little research has considered the shear rheological properties of interfacial stabilizing films 13 , and only one study has correlated emulsion stability by surface active biopolymers to high shear and compressional elasticity of the interfacial film 16 . The relationship between the demulsifier performance and interfacial rheology has been recognized [20][21][22] , but never investigated systematically for an important class of EO-PO based polymer demulsifiers at toluene-water interfaces.…”
